Clinical indications and screening

A rigorous medical assessment before any treatment

Whitening (also called teeth bleaching) works through an oxidation reaction in natural tooth tissue, so your dentist first screens your tooth structure carefully. If your teeth don't yet meet the conditions for safe whitening, Dr Tony Dental won't go ahead and will advise you on a suitable alternative. In that case, the check-up is free.

Usually a good fit

  • Yellowing from coffee or tea
  • Teeth that have darkened over the years
  • Before a big occasion, or just after braces or aligners

Better to wait, or choose another option

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Under 18: we whiten from age 18
  • Decay, gum inflammation, cracked teeth or leaking fillings: treat these first
  • Crowns, veneers or fillings on front teeth: these don't change colour
  • Tetracycline or fluorosis staining: lightens slowly, often needs more than one visit
  • Regular smoking: your dentist will assess this at the check-up

In-clinic treatment protocol

A standard 8-step clinical protocol (about 1 hour 45 minutes)

The whitening itself takes about 60 minutes (steps 4–6), usually three rounds under the light of 20 minutes each. The actual timing is adjusted to how your teeth respond.

How tooth shade is assessed clinically with the VITA Classical guide

The VITA Classical guide has 16 shades, ordered from lightest (B1) to darkest (C4). How many steps a shade moves on this guide is the standard clinical measure of how well whitening has worked.

On-screen colours are illustrative only and don't replace the physical guide.

Your shade can be judged after 24 hours

Straight after treatment your enamel is temporarily dehydrated, so teeth look lighter than they really are. Rehydration and colour stabilisation take about two weeks.

A personal prognosis

How much lighter your teeth get depends on the starting discolouration. Darker teeth usually respond more noticeably.

Minimal intervention

If your natural shade is already close to B1, there's little room to improve, and your dentist may advise that you don't need whitening at all.

  3. 04–06Whitening60 min
  4. 07–08Clean-up and gel10 min
  1. Examination and consultation

Your dentist checks your overall oral health and works out what is causing the discolouration and how yellow your teeth are. Worn tooth necks, decay or gum inflammation need to be fully treated before whitening.

  2. Recording your starting shade

Your dentist uses the standard VITA shade guide to record your current tooth shade, as a baseline to compare the result against afterwards.

  3. Scaling and surface cleaning

Removing plaque and tartar lets the whitening gel reach the tooth directly and penetrate the enamel evenly. Scaling is included in the treatment price.

  4. Protecting your lips, gums and soft tissue

A cheek retractor goes in, gauze protects your cheeks and tongue, and you wear medical safety glasses. A protective gel is applied along the gumline and set with a curing light, so the whitening agent can't touch your gums and cause a burning feeling.

  5. Applying the whitening gel

Your dentist applies an even layer of MANI Bleach'n Shine professional whitening gel, containing 35% hydrogen peroxide, to the teeth in your smile zone (usually 8–10 teeth per arch).

  6. Light activation

A light is used to help activate the gel, about 20 minutes per round. It's the active ingredient in the gel that breaks down the stain molecules. Depending on your teeth, applying the gel and the light may be repeated 2–3 times in one visit.

  7. Cleaning off and re-checking your shade

The gel is wiped off, the gum protection is removed and you rinse. Your dentist compares your new shade with the starting one to record the result. Your true shade can only be judged after 24 hours, because straight after treatment your teeth are dehydrated and look lighter.

  8. Desensitising gel and aftercare advice

Your dentist applies a remineralising, desensitising gel (such as fluoride or potassium nitrate) and explains what to eat and how to care for your teeth to keep them bright for longer.

Aftercare guidance

Shade settling & managing sensitivity

Mild sensitivity is a normal response as the whitening agent penetrates the tooth. It's usually strongest in the first 24–72 hours and eases on its own. Clinical data show around 60% of patients experience it. At Dr Tony Dental, sensitivity management is built into every treatment plan.

Our in-clinic safety standards

  • Isolate the soft tissue (lips, gums) before any whitening agent goes on.
  • Tailor the number of applications to your actual enamel.
  • Apply a desensitising agent straight after treatment if needed.

Home care advice

  • Limit very hot or very cold food and drinks.
  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste containing potassium nitrate and fluoride.
  • Never add over-the-counter whitening products on top.
  • Postpone planned restorations (fillings, veneers) for at least 2 weeks so your tooth shade can fully settle.

When to contact the clinic

  • Sensitivity lasting more than 7 days.
  • Sharp, spontaneous pain that isn't triggered by eating or drinking.
  • White patches or a burning feeling on the gums that show no sign of easing.

Do you need to avoid dark foods?

Yes, we recommend it. For the first 48 hours, leave anything that would stain a white T-shirt until later, to keep your new shade at its best.

Avoid for 48 hours

  • Cà phê sữa đá (iced milk coffee), black coffee
  • Strong tea, brown-sugar milk tea
  • Soy sauce, ketchup, hoisin dipping sauce
  • Caramel-braised dishes (thịt kho, cá kho)
  • Turmeric dishes: curry, bánh xèo
  • Annatto-red soups: bún bò Huế, bò kho
  • Red dragon fruit
  • Red wine, cola

Fine to enjoy

  • Clear chicken phở, no sauces added
  • Steamed rice, chicken rice porridge
  • Bánh cuốn (steamed rice rolls), fresh spring rolls with fish-sauce dip
  • Steamed fish, boiled chicken, tofu, eggs
  • Coconut water, yoghurt, fresh milk
  • Banana, pear, white dragon fruit

Expert answers

Clinical considerations before teeth whitening

How many shades whiter will my teeth get?

How much your shade improves depends on how your teeth respond, your natural enamel and what caused the discolouration. Teeth stained by food and drink usually lighten noticeably, while tetracycline or fluorosis staining needs a longer protocol. Your dentist assesses this at the examination and gives you a realistic outlook, rather than promising a fixed number.

Does teeth whitening damage enamel?

Under a strictly controlled clinical protocol, whitening is safe. The active ingredient breaks down stain molecules inside the dentine; it doesn't wear away the enamel surface. Damage comes from misuse: high-strength products used at home without supervision, or sessions repeated too often.

How long do whitening results last?

Results last around three years on average (the UK's NHS estimate for people who look after their teeth well). How quickly colour returns depends largely on your habits: smoking, tea, coffee and red wine bring staining back sooner. You can make results last longer by rinsing with water straight after dark food and drinks.

I'm only in Saigon for a few days. Can I fit it in?

In-office whitening is designed to be done in a single visit of about 1.5–2 hours, and you only need to book 30 minutes ahead. Medically, though, we recommend whitening at least 2–3 days before your flight: sensitivity usually appears in the first 24–72 hours, and your true shade can only be judged 24 hours after treatment.

Does “laser” or light-activated whitening work better?

Clinical reports show that adding a light (LED, plasma or laser) mainly acts as a catalyst: it doesn't make teeth meaningfully whiter than a professional gel alone, and doesn't reduce the risk of sensitivity. What drives the colour change is the quality of the peroxide that penetrates the tooth.

Will my crowns, veneers or fillings whiten too?

No. Whitening agents only cause an oxidation reaction in natural tooth tissue. Artificial restorations (crowns, veneers, composite fillings) won't change colour. If you plan to replace them, the standard approach is to whiten first, then wait about two weeks for your shade to settle before matching the new restorations.

Which gel do you use, and how strong is it?

We use MANI Bleach'n Shine, an in-office whitening gel containing 35% hydrogen peroxide. Your dentist decides how many rounds you need based on how stained your teeth are and the health of your enamel: more rounds don't mean better results, and they carry a higher risk of sensitivity.
